The
Buddhist Education Project provides financial aid to help cover the daily expenses of food and
education materials for more than 300 monks and nuns at Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery and at
its affiliated nunnery, Nagi Gompa.
Novice monks and nuns attend up to four 90-minute classes daily. secular academic studies, such
as reading, writing, grammar, history and mathematics, are taught side-by-side with the traditional
study of classic Buddhist scriptures, the ritual arts, liturgical chanting, as well as classes
in Tibetan, Sanskrit and Nepali. The fundamentals of English are also taught.
Once the monks and nuns have completed their basic monastic education, they are offered the opportunity to enroll in the shedra, a six-year course of higher education in the advanced study of Buddhist tenets, philosophy and canonical scriptures.
The ultimate objective is they become excellent Tibetan Buddhism teachers so that they can pass on its profound wisdom to the future generations. The suggested contribution toward sponsoring a monk or a nun is one dollar per day, or $365 per year
The
purpose of the project is to construct a three-story building to accommodate 200 young monks
between the ages of 6 and 16 at the Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery. The building will serve
as a separate self-contained facility with living quarters, large dining-hall, a library accommodating
hundreds of Buddhist scriptural texts and well-lit classrooms to address the needs of the ever-growing
enrollment of young monks.
After a delay caused by political upheaval, the first stage of construction began in the latter
half of 2006. The transfer of land into the monastery’s name was completed and basic materials
are now on site. Recently, Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, Chokling Rinpoche and Phakchok Rinpoche formally
broke the ground.
Tashi
Delek USA has been working hand-in-hand with Rangjung
Yeshe Shenpen, the volunteer-based non-profit organization based on Boudhanath, to provide
health care to monks and nuns and socially disadvantaged people in Nepal.
Carrie Sengelmen and Marsha Dupar of the Shenpen reported that the vaccination program—diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus
(DPT) and measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)—for the monks and nuns had been very successful and with
no major side effects. To date, they have completed two of the series of three vaccines for the
monks at Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery and Nagi Gompa. They plan to finish the series at both
of these monasteries by summer of 2007. Soon they will begin the series at the Vajra Vahari Monastery
in Chapagaun.
The project is to construct a three-storied medical clinic at the Vajra Vahari Monastery in Chapagaun, Lalitpur, Nepal. The planned three storied clinic will provide free services to socially disadvantaged people in Western allopathic, homeopathy, Ayuravedic, Tibetan, and Traditional Herbal Chinese medicine. The construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2007.
